General Information on IRS Form W-2
The left side of Form W-2 is used for general information about the employee. This side of statement is also used to identify the employer. As a general rule, boxes listed on the statement that are alpha characters are basic employer/employee information. The following are the alpha designated boxes:
- Box A – Employee’s social security number
- Box B – Employer identification number
- Box C – Employer’s name address and zip code
- Box D – Control Number
- Box E – Employee’s name
- Box F – Employee’s address and zip code
An employer’s identification number or EIN is used by government agencies to identify the employer. The employer uses the control number for internal filing or software purposes. If this box is empty, there’s no reason to worry. Prior to 2010, box A was used for the control number and box D for the employee’s social security number.
